Can you believe that Mother’s Day is around the corner? Last year I celebrated my first official Mother’s Day. The range of emotions I felt were unreal. Becoming a mommy is an amazing, overwhelming, yet beautiful feeling! Just knowing that I am blessed enough to have been chosen to be Camille’s mommy-what an honor! I pretty much cried the entire Mother’s Day weekend last year- and I’m sure this year will be no exception.

I was so excited when francesca’s asked me what being a mom means to me and how my own mother has inspired me. I thought it was the perfect time to get a little heartfelt on the blog as this topic is so near and dear to my heart. But, I felt it only right (and about time) to include Camille in this blog shoot! After all, she is the key to my heart. But, I knew I would be in for an emotional ride in writing this post. Therefore, I have tissues nearby because tears are imminent.

Before I had my daughter, Mother’s Day was a holiday that I pretty much avoided. My mother passed away in August 2010 of cancer. Mother’s Day became hurtful and emotionally draining. It was a void in my life that was deep and terribly empty. As I got older the relationship I had with my mom grew stronger and we became closer. My mom always told me when I was younger that she was my best friend lol. I didn’t understand then why she would say that. I had my own friends right? But, I started to understand what she meant the older I grew. I could tell her anything and trust that she would have my best interest at heart. Even if it meant telling me things I did not want to hear (which she was good at lol). Every day I wish that I still had my mother here to chat on the phone, go shopping with, and of course share in the love of seeing her granddaughter grow up.

Camille will be two in August. Where has the time gone? Every day she continues to show me that she is growing, learning, and changing. I want to protect her and shield her from this beautiful but crazy thing called life. I never understood why my mother was so protective over me, even as I got older. My mother used to say, “When you become a mom, you will understand.” Now I see that.  After my mother passed away, I didn’t really understand how I could move forward. Life was just not the same. I knew I wanted to have children and it seemed like my husband and I were having the most difficult time. That is, until God blessed me with my baby girl. Camille is my angel on earth! My heart has never been so full of joy and happiness. I look at her in amazement every day. Every night before she goes to bed, I sing to her, I rock her, and tell her “Mommy loves you to the moon and beyond!” That is what motherhood means to me: unconditional, powerful, bountiful love.
