Boyfriend shorts! They are the solution for over 30 gals like myself that don’t want to wear daisy dukes. I mean, if you got it, go on. But, I need my butt covered lol. I bought these boyfriend shorts last summer and have been wearing them constantly this season. They are perfectly comfortable, have a little distressing and come mid thigh! Those are some definite thumbs up in my book. I love that I can dress these shorts up with heels nor down with flip flops or flats, (as seen here). I love multi functional pieces in my closet for that reason! Thats why this look just speaks to me! A flirty off shoulder top, bright orange heels and bag says, “Yesss girl, GET IT!”

Have you been keeping up with the Olympics? I’ve caught a few of the events and I must say it does my heart good to see such determined, driven men and women represent their country! My heart is full to see the African- American representation at the Olympics. Of course, black girl magic is real! It was amazing to see Simone Biles completely slay gymnastics. Oh,I must tell you that Camille started gymnastics class this weekend. It was a treat to see. Well, honestly she was good for about the first 15 minutes when she could jump on the trampoline, but it went downhill from there lol. My baby don’t do new places or people very well, so it was melt down city to say the least. She may not be a “Simone Biles” just yet, but we can start working on it. Don’t you think?

I must thank everyone for your comments on my last post regarding my Scoliosis story. I was glad that God placed it on my heart to share with you! So many of you have shared your experience with Scoliosis to me. Its amazing to see how much we have in common and some of the struggles we share together. If you have any questions about my journey with Scoliosis or know someone who is going through it and need to hear a few words of positivity. Point them my way! I’d love to encourage them!!

See you soon!

Hey Loves!!

Scoliosis. A word I have dealt with since the age of 12. I hated that word, HATED it! Hated to say it, hated to see it, hated to deal with it!! Scoliosis is defined as “a lateral curvature of the spine.” Basically, your spine is not 100% straight. You may have an upper curvature or a lower curvature. For me, it was upper and my curvature was over 50 “degrees,” as they call it. Essentially, I have a hump on the right side of my shoulder, which caused one shoulder to be higher than the other. You could also tell by how I walked, as it looked like I was leading with the right side of my body. I wasn’t bent over like a hobbit or anything, but you could definitely notice. Talk about not starting off so good with self-confidence as a pre-teen! Not great!

I’ll never forget the day. My mother was getting on me for a while about not standing up straight when I walked and stand. As a 12 year old, this was the least of my concerns. One day we were in the basement and my mom told me to come here. She turned me around and looked down the back of my shirt and said, “Oh my God.” I didn’t understand what was happening, what did she see? “Nikki, (my nickname) you have a big hump on the right side of your shoulder.” What was she talking about? My mom immediately called my pediatrician and booked an appointment for me to come in. We saw my doctor that week. He leaned me over and measured my spine. Thats when he said the word, “Scoliosis.” I was scared, I didn’t know what it meant and if it was something very bad.

He referred me to many doctors: Orthopedic surgeons, Scoliosis specialists and any other doctor necessary. They all confirmed his diagnosis. Again, my curve was over 50 degrees. Quite noticeable! Imagine a scale being at “0.” Now think of that scale tipping 50 degrees to the right. Quite a significant difference don’t you think?? My mom and I asked, where did this come from? Its no real answer, its a bit common actually. Some people develop a curvature and some don’t. So how do you treat it? I had to wear a HARD, UNCOMFORTABLE, HOT, plastic brace that went from under my breast to right below my hips. It made me walk straighter, but very stiff. It was so hard to even breathe in that thing. The brace prevents the curve from going further but thats about it. To fix this issue, I would have to have spinal surgery.

See that long scar down my back in this picture? That is my “battle scar” as my husband calls it. I stopped wearing the brace not long after I got it because it was so uncomfortable and I hated it. I resolved someday to get the surgery and call it a day.  Fast forward to college, I was coming to the age (21) where I would no longer be covered under my parents insurance. So my parents and I discussed getting the surgery before that happened. We saw many doctors and they reviewed with me what to expect, potential outcomes and I even watched a little video describing the surgery. Whats funny is that my surgeon was a Children’s Orthopedic Surgeon. So there I was, my grown self in the waiting room with kids running around. LOL. But, it had to happen. I couldn’t go on with this ugly curve!

h&m striped open back bodysuit, dallas fashion blogger, black fashion blogger, colourpop "privacy please" liquid lipstick, dallas blogger, fashion blogger, black blogger, target cat eye sunglasses, tom ford dupe

The day of my surgery was very scary. We went to the hospital at 5am for pre op fun! I say that with so much sarcasm. I was scared. Scared, scared, scared! My back was basically going to be cut open and my spine held in place by rods and screws. I was so nervous that I cried and sat shaking in the hospital bed. My parents prayed over me. Thank God for praying parents!! They administered meds to knock me out for this 8 HOUR SURGERY!! Yes, 8 HOURS!! Can you understand why I was basically terrified?? Could you imagine the fear my parents had about what could potentially go wrong?? As a parent now, I cant imagine! They were so strong for me and showed no fear. God bless them!!

I’ll never forget feeling woozy as the meds kicked in. I kissed my parents and they wheeled me down the hall. My eyes closed and I was out of there. I woke up to the sound of my name and laying on my stomach. It took me a moment to realize where I was and what happened. Then the pain HIT ME!! There are no words to describe it. NONE AT ALL!! I screamed! There was so much pressure on my back and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I wanted my mom. I screamed for her. When she came in the room I felt better having her there. But, the pain was unbearable. I asked them to turn me over to my back. I felt like that would help. They did and it didn’t help at all! Thats all I really remember.

I was at the Children’s Hospital of Detroit for a week. They were AMAZING!! They took such good care of me and the food was DELISH!! Lol. My parents took shifts staying with me. One during the night, one during the day. What amazing parents! My church family came to visit me as well. I felt so loved and taken care of. Each day it got better, seriously! I had pain, but SO much better than the day of surgery. I was restricted to being home for a month along with no heavy lifting or excessive movement. Although my mom and I did make a trip to the mall. LOL. I saw my doctor a few times to make sure my back was healing properly. Things got better!

From what I recall, I went from an over 50 degree curvature to just under 20 degree!! A HUGE difference. You can still see the side of my shoulder that has a very slight hump. I’m ok with it!! This surgery changed my life!! My self confidence about what I wore and how I felt went through the roof. So even with my “battle scar,” I have no problem showing it. None AT ALL!! Its a small price to pay for something that was such a huge part of my life. That part of my back is still a bit numb from the surgery, even over 10 years later. Sometimes it feels a bit stiff, so I get massages to help with that. And who doesn’t like massages?!

Would I do the surgery again? YES, ABSOLUTELY!! The pain was a very small price to pay to not have that curvature anymore. Scoliosis impacted my life at a young age. Scoliosis is a very serious condition and shouldn’t be taken lightly. There is no cure for it either. As a parent, I will be checking Camille early to ensure she doesn’t have it too. I encourage any of you that may have Scoliosis or children who may have it, to see your doctor and discuss the best options. Surgery was the best option for me and I have no regrets!!

Sorry for this LONG post, but I felt it important to share my story. I cried typing this up. I thought of the day my mom saw the curve, the trips to see multiple doctors and the day of my surgery. But, it made me reflect and be SO thankful or my amazing parents. They were my strength during this time!! Oh, I cant forget to mention that my then “friend,” now husband, was on the phone with my parents while I was in surgery. Checking in for updates and making sure I was ok. LOL I guess I found out how much my “friend” cared, which was pretty amazing too!

Do you have scoliosis or know someone that does? I’d love to hear your story. If you have ANY questions, please comment below or email me. I have no problem sharing as you can see!

Hello There!!

“What to Wear to Work On Monday” Part 2 is here!! This series is a work in progress for me because I struggle every morning wondering what to wear to work. I’ve fell off in that area and need to get it together. I really need to start focusing more on work appropriate pieces so stay tuned for more. This series will not only be helpful for you, but for me too! Yes, I am back again in these stunning culottes from Ann Taylor!! I wore them on the blog a while ago in navy and I am wearing the stripe pair here (now 40% off). They are simply amazing and I love the flare and structure on these pants. These are perfect for a business casual office environment. I added my trusty denim shirt and tan sandals and called it a day!!

This week has been really long for me as I am starting a new work schedule and new process at my job. My days are a bit longer and I am in traffic coming and going home. It is definitely an adjustment for me because my time at home with Camille is already limited before she heads off to bed. Being a working mom is hard! I feel that I don’t get enough time with my little one and they grow so fast! I often look at her and I swear she grew from the day before. There’s simply not enough hours in the day. I wish I was a millionaire,  then I would not have these #adulting work place/home life struggles. LOL.

Enough venting:) I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

More off shoulder goodness is on the blog! I hope you aren’t growing tired of it. This time I paired this plaid, off shoulder top with my favorite distressed boyfriend shorts! I love the casual vibe of this outfit and how its comfortable as well. Its nothing like an outfit that can go from shopping, brunch, movies, grocery store and everything else that”adulting” makes us do! I also am obsessed with my gold espadrille sandals. They are the perfect finishing touch to making this outfit “summer ready” Don’t you agree?

I am so ready for the weekend. Work has been a little nuts with changes soon on the way. Being a mommy to a toddler is becoming more work as she’s learning more and discovering how to take off her diaper when she goes to bed lol. Blogging seems to be taking off, but requires a lot of work!!! It makes me happy though, so I am so excited about the possibilities its opening up. Life is just becoming…. more! I went over the “schedule” with the husband tonight, as we must do with a child. Can you believe we have something scheduled EVERY weekend this month??? I am already tired just thinking about it. Pray for me!!

How do you balance craziness with family, work and life itself?? I’d love to hear!!

sugar and cloth color wall, houston texas, dallas blogger, yellow asos maxi dress, road trip,

Hey there!

I’ve been wanting to go on a road trip for the longest!! Its nothing like packing up the car and setting out on the highway for an adventure. Well, this summer we headed out on a 4 hour road trip to Houston!! We drove up to Houston for my husband’s cousin surprise birthday party a few weeks ago. If you follow me on Snapchat (alwayzfashlate) you would have seen all the action. Oh, how do you like this color wall? I was so excited to learn that Houston has an amazing color wall at the Sugar and Cloth Studio. Of course we had to stop there before heading home!! Because you know, a blogger is gonna blog and I need “instagrammable” pictures. We only stayed in Houston overnight, but we had so much fun. I’ll have to come back again!

When you set out on the road for a few hours, of course you want to feel comfortable and safe. Even more so with a toddler! My husband and I do not have a SUV unfortunately. So having a SUV for this trip was necessary! I was so happy when DriveShop let us drive their 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport on our trip to Houston. On our road trip in the Outlander, we definitely realized a SUV is needed for our family. There was plenty of space for all of our gear, a surprisingly roomy back seat, trunk (essential for diaper changes, hello) and Sirius radio that made the drive even better. Oh, and did you notice the panoramic roof?? Fancy!! I really enjoyed driving this vehicle and was sad to give it back. lol. DriveShop, you sure do know how to spoil a girl!!

See you Thursday for my next outfit post!

A “Date Night” outfit is always a must-have around these parts! My husband and I don’t get many date nights since having Camille. But, when we do, I always have a good date night outfit on hand so I can slay lol. We decided to up our game on date nights this summer and have one coming up soon. This casual, but dressed up outfit is PERFECT for date night if you ask me! Especially, this gorgeous top from SheIn! Its EVER-YTHING!!! As soon as I tried it on, I got super excited because it’s so stylish, unique and comfortable!!  When I think of what to wear on date nights, my go to is a cute, flirty top, jeans and heels. So putting this ensemble together was easy!! The ripped jeans, statement clutch and bold red lips makes me feel sexy and ready to hit the streets with my boo!!

Oh and this lemonade that you see in all of my pictures was so necessary! LOL. It had to be 100 degrees out when we were shooting in Downtown, Mckinney, Texas. It was scorching hot!! So when I saw a frozen lemonade sign, I ran in and IMMEDIATELY asked for the largest one they had!!  It was absolutely delicious and made the shoot a lot cooler. I absolutely refused to put it down while taking these pics lol. The struggle is so real with these blog shoots people! I may write a post on what to pack for a blog shoot if any of you future bloggers out there are interested! Let me know!

See you soon for my next post!!

It’s my shoe closet reveal!! You all know I love shoes, I’m a certified shoe lover! Our closet in our master is simply not big enough to contain my shoes. Thankfully, my husband was on board with using our spare bedroom as my shoe room. I purchased these Ikea bookcases and vanity table about 2 years ago (right before Camille was born) and that’s all that was “done” in this room. Once Camille arrived, all home projects came to a halt. So I haven’t gotten around to finishing my shoe closet until now.  The unfortunate part about it, is that I won’t have this room for much longer once we start trying for baby #2. So my shoes will probably get crammed into our guest room. Sacrifices! Until then, I am enjoying this glam shoe closet/vanity space I’ve created!

How To Achieve My Shoe Haven:

  1. Focal Point Of Interest: I’ve wanted to do a gallery wall above my vanity for the longest! I didn’t want a big mirror on the wall, I like my small vanity mirror that gets up close and sometimes a little too personal lol. I am so thrilled with how it came out! I wanted my gallery wall to say glam!! So I took to Etsy to find wall art that spoke to me. There are so many cute options out there!  I linked all of my prints so you can purchase them and a few more that I am still drooling over! Don’t want to drill a bunch of nails into your wall? I used Command picture hanging strips! They definitely work!
  2. Storage, storage, storage: You can never have too much! I’m a girl who loves her jewelry and makeup. Storage is super important to have everything I need in one place. I had my makeup storage case for a while, it’s actually two acrylic storage containers stacked on top of one another. I also needed storage for my most loved jewelry and  sunglasses. I know you want to know where did I find these amazing acrylic cases?! “At Home” to the rescue! These acrylic storage containers are absolutely PERFECT!! I searched high and low on the internet for acrylic storage cases like these. The price is super affordable too and is just what I needed. Score!
  3. Unique Finds: Prada Marfa anyone? I happened across this piece on Instagram and had to purchase immediately! I needed something on that wall and I wasn’t quite sure what that would be. This was the perfect unique piece to add to the room.  I also love this glamorous, mirrored nightstand from “At Home” too. It was love at first sight! It adds just the right touch of sophistication and glam to the space, without it being “too much.” It also comes in black too, so if you have an “At Home” near you, be sure to check it out!
  4. Use Bookcases as your shelves: The greatest Ikea hack ever!! These bookcases are so affordable and perfect for a shoe closet project like this. They also come in other colors too!! My bookcases were pretty easy to build and I can adjust the shelves or buy additional ones if need be. Two thumbs up!
  5. Statement Rug: I think this was the hardest decor decision I had to make in this room. I didn’t know what color I wanted and ordering a rug online can be daunting. A circular rug was a must in my opinion for a small room. I scoured the internet for the perfect one and I believe I found it at Overstock. The only con regarding this rug is that it does shed a bit. However, I love it and how it lifts the space!! I linked a few other options for you to check out as well!

How do you like Little Ms. Camille? It was the cutest thing ever shooting with her! She is generally super shy when we get our pictures taken. I’m not sure if she remembered my photographer from our last shoot or the fact that we were at home that made her so comfortable. But, as soon as we walked into my shoe room, she sat in middle of the floor with Elmo and began to smile and pose. She completely took over the shoot! LOL. There were so many great images of her, it was hard to choose! Camille was ready for her close up, maybe modeling is in her near future?

If you have any questions about my shoe closet, please make sure you check out the images above!! I have linked as many of the products shown underneath the images. Of course, I’m always open to any questions you may have so please comment or email me!

Does this closet give you #closetgoals? It sure does for me 🙂

See you soon for my next post!

Hello again!

When my eyes spied these floral pants online at Zara, I knew I had to have them. I was a little leary of the bold, floral print. But, thought it could be a fun piece to add to my summer wardrobe. I’ve had these babies for about two months now and I wore them for the first time when we shot this look a few weeks back. I always adored floral print, but I would usually lean toward the smaller, less statement making print. Well, it was high time I tried something bold and fun! I am so happy I did. Once I pieced this look together, I loved the simple, casual vibe it exudes! Don’t you?

I wasn’t sure what top to wear with these floral pants. Until I walked into H&M and found the cutest, open back tee for only $5!! It was such a great deal, I grabbed it in white as well! Unfortunately, I cannot find the t-shirt online, but I did link similar tops!! Its a really cute, unexpected detail that adds a little excitement to a regular t-shirt. Head to your local H&M and see if you can score this tee too!!

How do you wear floral print? Does the floral pattern scare you a bit?  I’d love your thoughts on more ideas on how to style these pants.

boyfriend shorts, age appropriate shorts, shorts under $50

Boyfriend shorts are my easy, go to’s when it comes to shorts! They have a loose fit, typically some nice distressing and guess what? They are age appropriate for a girl over 30! I wore a pair of boyfriend shorts on my Instagram the other week.  Some of you asked where did I find shorts long enough that my butt cheeks aren’t hanging out? LOL the struggle is so real! I immediately knew how they felt. When I go shopping and look for a pair of shorts, its so hard! They are beyond short! I’m talking “Daisy Dukes.” I’m sorry, but I can’t go around with booty shorts on. How is that even comfortable?

Anyways, I rounded up ten pair of denim shorts that are butt cheek friendly, all under $50!! I hope you find this a little helpful in your quest to find cute, stylish, age appropriate shorts. Lets face it, we don’t want to wear shorts that either a) you look like an 18 year old in (although I don’t mind looking younger lol)  or b) shorts that look like you’re wearing a diaper or an 80’s fanny pack! So not cute!

See you Thursday for another fashion post!!
