Hey Loves!

So today I am coming to you with a little coffee talk, chit chat or what have you. This has been on my mind a little bit and I thought I’d share with you all. I often share little tidbits on blogging and how to make it work for you. But, I haven’t shared the down side to it. There are quite a few areas that I can dive in to regarding that. But, lets talk about what makes blogging what it is. The people behind the blog who you follow. The actual bloggers themselves!

Now I am not gonna give any names or try to call people out. But, some of these bloggers out here are a trip. Some are in it for the money, recognition and yes the likes. I live in Dallas and there are a TON of bloggers here. Its almost like the darn mecca for bloggers. Because of that, I have met many at social events, blog conferences or meet ups. The great thing about living in a city with tons of bloggers is that you get to meet others who do what you do and  get what the blog life is all about. Most importantly, bloggers with whom you can chat, collaborate or become friends and grab dinner together! I am fortunate to know quite a few of bloggers who I enjoy hanging with and are happy to call my tribe.

But, honey let me tell you about those who do not meet my tribe category. The snobby ones who can’t bother to say hello, shake your hand or even hold a little small chat convo with you. The blogger clique who always appear to be at the same blogger event or photographed brand meeting together. Sometimes I think, were they the only ones offered an opportunity? No girl, they just looking out for their clique. Essentially, they are getting money together and ensure that their clique has “the plug” as y’all like to call it these days.

Disclaimer: This post is not meant to bash folks, but just to share what I have experienced and witnessed for myself!

So lets begin our coffee chat shall we?

I recall attending a store event where myself and a few other bloggers here in the Dallas were invited to attend as featured guests. I specifically recall one blogger, who I won’t give a name, left me with a bad impression. So I walked up to her and introduced myself and told her that I followed her on Instagram. She gave me the driest response and looked as so bothered that I was even near her. I’m like really though? Is this how you treat people in general? Her attitude was just so stank and unwelcoming. I couldn’t believe it!

Now, I am not going to make this about race or not, but I did wonder if that played a part in her attitude. Also, I know bloggers, who like myself, are of the melanated nature and have all said the same about her. I made sure to unfollow her that night because guess what? I am not going to contribute to you getting any coin from me. Not a click, like, follow or purchase will come from me to support your blog. First impressions are lasting! Every time I see her at an event, I strongly resist the urge to roll my eyes or give her a severe side eye lol.

Not supporting up and coming bloggers!

If you guys follow me on Insta Stories on Instagram, you know I typically do a “Follow Friday” a few times a month. Follow Friday is to share with my followers some of my favorite up and coming bloggers in the game who I feel they should follow. These bloggers generally have a following of under 15k and are deserving of more eyes on their Instagram!

I mentioned blogger cliques earlier and I noticed that one of the bloggers I used to follow from that same clique, just so happened to be doing the same thing. Well, her and her clique, were all doing Follow Friday and telling their followers to follow everyone in their clique. What annoyed me, is that these bloggers all have over 150k followers!! I personally thought, how obvious was it that they only support themselves?? Why not share the love with bloggers who are trying to get to those numbers? I get supporting your tribe, but again, to me they do not show tribe behavior. Its clique behavior all up and thru and I cannot get behind it.

The constant lack of diversity!

Let’s not even talk about lack of diversity when it comes to blogging. I could write a book on that for sure. As an African-American blogger in the game, I cannot tell you how many times I see only white bloggers at brand luncheons, campaign events and the like when I am on Instagram. I’m sorry, but its ridiculous!

Some of these Instagram pages lack any African- American bloggers and when you do see one, you have to scream for joy and shout it to the highest rooftop on their page to please share more. No, I don’t want to be invited so they can meet their quota or to take the heat off of people. But, I just believe your brand reach or target audience has quite a few African-Americans or even Latinas and the like as well. So, where are they??? Why don’t we see them? Were they even invited, reached out to, or asked for an opportunity for collaboration??

Why do I feel so strongly about this?

I know you may be reading this post thinking, dang girl, who made you mad? Lol. Actually, after blogging for almost 3 years, I am just starting to feel some kind of way about the things I see. I’ve been unfollowing a ton of bloggers I use to love because I just cannot take the fakery anymore.

One blogger, I use to absolutely love about five years ago! She was even following me back then when I was just taking outfit of the day pics in my backyard. She would even comment often on my pics. I noticed that she has changed so much over the time that her blog has taken off. She won’t even turn her DM on her Instagram. She tells you to go find everything on her blog. I mean, I get it girl, you probably would get tons of the same questions. But, its not what you say, its how you say it! I had to let unfollow her and a few others who appeared to be a bit beside themselves because of their popularity and growth. It just is what it is!

What lesson can you take away from this coffee chat?

I know that personally I am in a period in life where either you are real or fake. There is no in between. At this stage in my life where I am a wife, mother, blogger and everything else under the sun, things have to make sense. How I utilize my time and efforts are of the utmost importance to me. This is why its important to me to surround myself with others who like to encourage, uplift and motivate one another.

I enjoy meeting other women who are interested in blogging or just feel like we may have a connection. I enjoy getting emails or DMs from my followers who feel they can relate to me! It means a lot. I guess I am saying no matter how you elevate in life, be it career, ambitions or ventures, be true to yourself and others. Be the person you would be proud of! At the end of the day, the number of followers, likes or your bank account will not be how you are remembered. Am I right, or am I right?

Share with me some of your gripes with bloggers! This post is not meant to bash folks, but just to share what I have experienced and witnessed for myself!

Hey Loves!

Happy Sunday! I receive so many emails, DMs or what have you from those of you who are interested in blogging. The blog life can be A LOT!! I haven’t gotten to where I want to be with blogging. It is my hope to do it full time with the income to match. I got a ways to go before I get there. But, let me tell you, the journey has still been quite rewarding.

Blogging requires time, money, and passion! If you plan to only blog once a month or barely that, you need to re evaluate your goal. You MUST be consistent. Blogging is an oversaturated industry. I always tell those who are interested in starting a blog, that you have to treat your blog like it’s your best friend. You don’t go months without saying hi to your bestie do you? If you did, your relationship may suffer a bit and you may not be as close as you once were. Thats why consistency is important! If you followers don’t see you or hear from you, they move on to the next blog. You have to remain in front of the faces of those who support your blog. Otherwise, they will forget you and move on! You want to grow your audience, in order to do that, you must remain present!

I have been blogging for about 2.5 years. Majority of that time I was working a full time job. Well, I was laid off several months ago. I am actually looking into a new career in the field of Social Media. I am hoping to work with a brand or company as a Social Media Specialist or Strategist using what I have learned in blogging. During this time of being laid off, I had to be more mindful of my spending habits, which also meant not shooting with my photographer every two weeks. Insert tears here! lol. It’s not too bad, as its hot here in Dallas, so the thought of doing a shoot in this heat drains me. So I have to look for other ways to get pictures done and keep the blog going.

Queue the title of this post, work with what you have!! My husband blessed me with a DSLR camera for Christmas and honey it’s the best gift ever! I’ve used this baby constantly!! I am yet learning how to use this camera to the best of its capability. I took online workshops on photography, looked on Pinterest for tips and just practiced on how to use my camera.  Today I had the day to myself with Camille in school. I had to get this top and beach blanket photographed for the blog. So I pulled out my tripod, my handheld timer and headed to my back yard. I just wanna say that I appreciate my neighbors for their gorgeous pink tree in the background. It was just what I needed for a pop of color lol.

So even though this photo isn’t filled with a bright wall, or a downtown backdrop, its still a pretty picture. Sometimes we get caught up in to the look of things, that we don’t admire whats around us. The trees, the sunshine and the breeze that blessed me this morning. Now, the mosquito bites I received on the other hand, I can’t do anything about that! lol.

I encourage you to make the best with what you have in this blogging adventure. People are looking to see you for who you are. Who is the girl behind the lens? What is her personality? What makes her laugh, what makes her dance?! Embrace that and enjoy the ride!

Want to know more about this Blog Life?

If you enjoyed this post, PLEASE let me know. I have more to come! Especially behind the scene tips and the like!

Hey there!

So let’s talk about SheIn or SheInside clothing for a minute today, Ok? I get tons of questions from followers, friends, family, aunties, cousins, everybody and their mama about SheIn. Lol. Is it safe to order? Will I order one thing and get another? Will it be five sizes too small? Does it look the same as the picture? How long will it take to order? I totally get it. To tell you the truth I would have those same questions and reservations about ordering from an online retailer overseas. For me, I need to feel safe about using my credit card and really just getting what I paid for. So let’s address some of the questions I receive about SheIn and why I feel its totally fine for you to order.

Oh and this sweatshirt AND leggings are from SheIn by the way!

Does it fit correctly? Will I order a small and get something a newborn can fit?

Ok, so thats not really the question I get about the newborn, but you know what I mean. I’ve seen the horror stories online about overseas retailers, where customers get the tiniest little dress or top when they order. That’s a hot mess for sure! In my experience with SheIn, I have never ordered anything where the size was significantly smaller then what I ordered. Now, there was ONE piece I ordered, a shirt, that was way too big on me. In this case, I feel that they mis-marked the size. What I stress to everyone who is interested in ordering is to READ THE REVIEWS!!! If the item I am interested in does not have reviews, I will more than likely not order it. The reviews are so helpful to me in determining what size to wear, quality and fit.

Take for instance the leggings I am wearing in the above pics. All of the reviews noted to SIZE UP! So thats what I did. I definitely agree that the leggings run small. So again, read the reviews and make a decision before ordering. This will  help you to feel more at ease about the fit. I almost always tell you in my blog post if an item is true to size or to size up/down when I am wearing SheIn. So be sure to look for that information as well!

Does It Look the Same In the Picture?

Yes it does. Simply put huh?

How is the quality??

Ok everyone, huddle around so you can hear this loud and clear. Lol. The quality to me is no different than Forever 21 and SOMETIMES H&M. I have received one or two things where I felt that the fabric should of been a little heavier in weight or the fabric felt a bit thin/see thru to me. I have washed and worn all of my pieces quite a few times. This is where I say, if you take care of your clothes, it will last. This has been the case with all of my orders. I have had no issues with the item falling a part on me or losing shape in the wash. So just wash them carefully and take care of them!!

My suggestion: check out the product details and see what the fabric is made of. That will give you an indication of what to expect such as if it would look cheap, see thru or too thin.

How long does it take to receive it?

I typically receive my order in about 2 weeks. So don’t order it today expecting to get it Friday. No ma’am!

Is it safe to use my credit card?

Ok, so here’s the deal. I have not “purchased” anything from SheIn. Since I am a blogger, they allow me to pick a few pieces to feature on the blog. But, I have close friends who have ordered and I have not heard of any issues. Plus, lots of you have already ordered from them as well. So I have not received any emails from my followers stating there was ever an issue with their credit card. But of course, always be cautious when using your credit card online by monitoring your account for any funky activity. Safe to say that I have not heard of any issues.

Have I ever returned anything because of the fit/quality?

Yes, about three things I returned. Compare that to all of the items I have from SheIn (probably about 20) and its no different then purchasing an item at the mall or heck, Nordstrom’s.

Do I get paid to promote SheIn?

Girl I wish! I do earn commission from what you buy thru my Reward Style affiliate program. I kind of chatted about that in my last post. Did you read it? Read more about my Like to Know It post!

I hope this post has helped with answering any questions you may have regarding SheIn. Also, it appears they are having a little Pre-Summer sale for up to $40 off! How timely?!

Hey Loves!

So I thought I would start sharing some behind the scenes posts regarding the blog world. I get tons of questions regarding blogging and its high time I answer them. Today, I am  going to chat about Reward Style or “Like to Know It.” What is Like to Know It? Well, if you follow me on the Instagram, you may have seen the term, “sign up for Like to Know It” or “shop my looks with ‘Like to Know It’.” So lets discuss what it means to me as a blogger and to you as a consumer.

So what is it exactly?

Like to Know It is an app or web tool for bloggers to link products they are wearing on Instagram and their personal blogs. I go into the app, select the picture I want to post and link all the products using the tool from the app. Then the image is posted to Instagram. Once posted, the caption includes the url to shop the products and hash tag #likeit as well. As a consumer, this allows you to shop the products from that picture straight from your email. But, you have to be signed up for it FIRST!!

Once you are signed up, all you have to do is “LIKE” my pic on Instagram. Within minutes, the product information is sent directly to your email. This allows you to see where I purchased the item and buy. Its super easy and if you love what I wear, something you should definitely sign up for. They also created an app (FREE) for the consumer.  All you do is screenshot the post of me and shop it from the app. To be honest, I haven’t signed up for that service yet. I am just fine with tapping a pic on IG and calling it a day. I don’t need another app taking away more space on my Iphone, ok?!

Why do you use it as a consumer?

As a person who also uses this as a consumer, I use it constantly. I love using it when I want to know if a product I “liked,” should even be on my radar (how much is it?). Also, I don’t have to wait for a blogger to respond or find it myself. I just wait for the email to pop up and have at it. If you are concerned about getting too many emails, don’t! You can easily log in to your account and select how often you want to receive the emails or none at all.

Why do you use it as a blogger?

Ok, so this is a two fold question. 1) I use it so that my followers can easily shop what I am wearing. Lets face it, life gets busy and I am not always on Instagram readily available to answer questions and comments. So its great that all my followers have to do is sign up and go to their emails to find out the tea on what I am wearing. 2) I earn commission from the products you purchase via the links. I am not shamed at all for saying this pays me some coins!! Now I am not over here getting broke off, the commission is small. But, its definitely nice to see a few of those payments hit my account. #truthtea lol

Conclusion

So there you have it. I hope this has helped some of you who 1) want to become bloggers and want to know what services or tools you can use to monetize. 2)have been seeing this on my Instagram of Facebook and was wondering what the heck it is lol. If you are a blogger and are interested in applying for this program, feel free to email me. But, I will say they are selective on who they accept. And girl, that’s a whole other blog post on that one! Lol.

How do I sign Up?

Sign up for Like to Know It HERE and start shopping!! If you are not interested in signing up, no worries. Just click on the link in my Instagram profile and you can shop the products there! I got you boo!!

Stay tuned for more “behind the scenes” blog life info! Feel free to share with me what you would like me to chat about next!

Hey Loves!

I hope you had a fabulous weekend. My weekend was spent cleaning the house and attending an Alvin Ailey Dance Company performance. Which by the way was simply amazing!! Such a great opportunity for some culture and to get dressed up. Speaking of which, I dont always get the opportunity to put on a pretty dress and hit the town. Especially as a mommy, the days of getting dressed up sometimes feel few and far in between.

So, what is my mommy style?

I wanted to discuss mommy style today on the blog. I learned quickly when Camille came home from the hospital, that getting time to take care of myself would be rare. If I wanted to take care of me, it would require effort on my part to not let go of what made me feel good as a woman. After all, who wants to lose their mojo?

Those of you who are moms understand the typical “mom uniform” of yoga pants or sweats can get pretty boring. And dare I say, not always stylish?!

I find it important to look for comfortable pieces that also has style and allows you to look well put together. For me, some days that is boyfriend jeans and a tee or most recently, this combination I am wearing here. Printed leggings and this super soft velvet/velour hoodie. Which is probably the most comfortable and simple outfit in my closet!

You guys, I have worn this outfit OUT! From dropping Camille off at daycare, meeting a friend for breakfast or hitting the grocery store, this outfit has kept me all the way together. Not to mention I usually end up petting this sweatshirt because its so darn soft and comfy. I definitely cannot exclude these polka dot mesh leggings. Seriously, how cute are they?!

I hope this outfit idea shows you that not even a fashion blogger is ALWAYS in heels or dry clean only pieces. There is a time and a place for everything. And most times, comfort does win. But, sacrificing style is never an option!

Friday is upon us loves! I think every person in the world loves Friday. Its when the work week comes to an end and the promise of relaxation, sleeping in, happy hours and brunches are on the horizon. Its also the day when most companies allow for that most wonderful day called Casual Friday. Let me tell you, the struggle to put on office appropriate clothes was a difficult one for me. I would grab whatever had the least wrinkles and wore it with pride. I’m a girl who loves her jeans so for me, Casual Friday’s is where its at!

Today’s look is perfect for Casual Friday. The flare sleeve blouse works so well with the flare jeans! When I saw this blouse, I immediately had to have it. The ruffles, stripes and the ties on the sleeves all plays so well together. Its blouses like these you are happy to have in your closet. It pairs well with jeans, skirts, pants, culottes. Its just a perfect piece. Not to mention, this flare sleeve blouse is ONLY $23!! Girllll, yall know I love affordable fashion. We ball on a budget over here. This is a steal too good to miss. So get you one soon!

What do you have up for the weekend? Me? I’ll probably put off cleaning and find something fun to do 🙂

See you Sunday for my next post!

Its almost Friday!!

Definitely time to celebrate! Soooo about this off shoulder blazer… I’m here for it! So often, it seems like you’re wearing the same thing over and over and nothing stands out on its own. Well, when I saw this blazer, I knew I had to have it. I mean, you all know I love off the shoulder anything, but to see it in a blazer is totally news to me. I had to order it and see if I loved it. And with this look, I most certainly do!!

This is another SheIn purchase! I know some people are a little hesitant to order from SheIn. You may have heard of those crazy stories where people order from those overseas websites and buy a dress and it looks a hot mess. Well, I’ve ordered from SheIn quite a few times (just search my site)  and I have not experienced those horror stories. What I like to do, is read the reviews of the item I am interested in FIRST before purchasing! That way, I have a good idea if I am buying a good piece or not. This off shoulder blazer has a good weight to it and great structure! The only thing that bugs me is that you see the two buttons from the bottom up, except at the top of the blazer, you only see the one. Its made to look like that, but thats a detail I would love changed. Otherwise, this is definitely a stand out piece and guess what? You probably won’t see many people wearing it because its so unique and its just different!

What are your thoughts on this off shoulder blazer? You here for it or nah??

I’ am over summer! Over it! But, my off shoulder dresses?? I’m here for it!

Why is it still super HOT in Dallas? Today with the humidity it was 104. 104 folks! In the words of one my favorite comedians, Tyree Elaine, “I just wanna walk in my purpose”…. and wear my fall clothes! I am ready for my leather leggings, leather jackets and down vest, over the knee boots and deep wine colored lipsticks and vampy nails. Sorry, I just had a moment lol. Fall fashion is my jam! Its what my closet is all about. But, even though I am hoping, wishing and praying for cooler days, the off shoulder trend is still going strong. I cant wait to start rocking a few knitted off shoulder dresses with knee boots and a floppy hat. Fall vibes, I am feeling them. Are you?!

So since we still have some hot days in Dallas, its not out of the norm for me to wear this summer style off shoulder dress from SheIn. If you are still experiencing some heat where you live, then this dress may be for you. Its super comfy and easy to throw on. Now, it is very see thru, so a slip or thong may be something to consider. But, even so this cutie is definitely one to wear before the cool weather is upon us.

Are you ready for fall weather where you are? If you already experiencing fall where you are, I AM JEALOUS!

See you soon for another post!!

This maxi dress right here?! This right here?! Yes, its my most favorite maxi dress this summer and possibly my most favorite ever.  I can sing its praises all day long. I love how it flows and flares out as I walk. Even the slightest turn and it spins beautifully around my legs. It also has a drawstring waist to cinch and accentuate curves. But, you know why I really love it right? Yes, the off shoulder detail gives me all of the feels! It takes this dress up a notch and I am here for it. Since I have gotten the dress, I have worn it countless times. I’ve worn it to run errands, shopping and dressed it up for a brunch event with lace up heels. I always receive SOOOOO many compliments when I wear this dress. You MUST BUY THIS DRESS! ASAP!

I am so excited because next week I am going on a girls trip for some much needed fun!! Its always good to have some fun with your friends and unwind. Its time to start packing and I am working on a quick post on what I like to pack in my carry on bag. I always like to get ideas of what people like to pack when traveling. So I hope to be able to do this for you and share  a few of my travel necessities. So stay tuned!

Oh, and GRAB THIS DRESS!

Boyfriend shorts! They are the solution for over 30 gals like myself that don’t want to wear daisy dukes. I mean, if you got it, go on. But, I need my butt covered lol. I bought these boyfriend shorts last summer and have been wearing them constantly this season. They are perfectly comfortable, have a little distressing and come mid thigh! Those are some definite thumbs up in my book. I love that I can dress these shorts up with heels nor down with flip flops or flats, (as seen here). I love multi functional pieces in my closet for that reason! Thats why this look just speaks to me! A flirty off shoulder top, bright orange heels and bag says, “Yesss girl, GET IT!”

Have you been keeping up with the Olympics? I’ve caught a few of the events and I must say it does my heart good to see such determined, driven men and women represent their country! My heart is full to see the African- American representation at the Olympics. Of course, black girl magic is real! It was amazing to see Simone Biles completely slay gymnastics. Oh,I must tell you that Camille started gymnastics class this weekend. It was a treat to see. Well, honestly she was good for about the first 15 minutes when she could jump on the trampoline, but it went downhill from there lol. My baby don’t do new places or people very well, so it was melt down city to say the least. She may not be a “Simone Biles” just yet, but we can start working on it. Don’t you think?

I must thank everyone for your comments on my last post regarding my Scoliosis story. I was glad that God placed it on my heart to share with you! So many of you have shared your experience with Scoliosis to me. Its amazing to see how much we have in common and some of the struggles we share together. If you have any questions about my journey with Scoliosis or know someone who is going through it and need to hear a few words of positivity. Point them my way! I’d love to encourage them!!

See you soon!
